The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a transformative program that offers funding and support for people with disabilities in Australia. Funding offered by NDIS is divided into three main categories. Each category is designed to address specific goals and needs of participants. It is important to understand these categories and their flexibility, so that NDIS participants can get the most out of their plans. With that in mind, let’s take a look at the 3 categories in detail.
The core support budget is the foundation of a NDIS plan. It can cater to the day-to-day needs of an individual. This is the most flexible budget as well. You will be able to allocate funds across different support categories. They include:
The Core Support Budget provides all the participants to go ahead and allocate their funds across these four categories so it is possible for them to manage their funds as per their changing needs. As a result, they will be able to make the right choices based on their requirements and improve daily living.
The capacity building budget empowers people to develop their skills, independence, and capabilities to achieve long-term goals. It has multiple categories as well. However, you will not be able to move funds from one category to another. Funds allocated will be dedicated to the category. Below mentioned are the different categories considered under the capacity building budget.
Even though you cannot allocate funds in between different categories, you will still be able to choose the support that align with your individual goals as well as aspirations.
The capital supports budget is dedicated to cover the cost of expensive items. They include home modifications, advanced equipment, assistive technologies, and other related one-off purchases. Specialist Disability Accommodation, or SDA falls under this category as well. This budget is quite restricted, as you will need to use it for the specific purpose. You cannot use it for other expenses. Below-mentioned are the different categories that it covers.
As mentioned earlier, the capital supports budget will only address specific and high-cost needs. Hence, the participants will need to use their funds for the designated purpose at all times. However, they will still have the freedom to pick what modifications they need to do for the home or what equipment they need to purchase.
Now you have a clear idea about the three categories of NDIS and their flexibility. With that in mind, you can make informed decisions when using your allocated budget.
