R U OK? Day is an Australian Initiative dedicated to reminding people to check in with others, especially when they might be going through a rough patch. It’s an invitation to connect, have meaningful conversations, and ask the simple yet powerful question: “Are you okay?”.
Though there is a designated day – this year it’s Thursday 11th September – the message is that real care and check-ins should happen any day. After all, life has ups and downs every day.
Here are some ways individuals, workplaces, schools, and communities can get involved:
Don’t wait for someone to show signs. Sometimes the fact that you care enough to ask is already meaningful.
R U OK? provides free guides, posters, videos, digital/social media assets, conversations-cards, etc. These help people feel confident about asking, knowing what to say, how to listen.
Whether big or small, in person or online, events create space for people to connect in a more structured way: a coffee-morning check-in, a discussion group, a workplace gathering.
Wearing yellow, using branded conversation starters, sharing on social media, putting up posters – these all help keep the message in people’s minds.
Aim for more than one. Let R U OK? Day be a reminder, not the only time. Ask your friends, family, colleagues how they’re really going, often.
Conversations about emotional wellbeing can feel a bit awkward, especially if you’re not used to them. Here are some ideas to make them more comfortable and effective:
R U OK? Day is more than a campaign or a date on the calendar. It’s a reminder that sometimes the smallest questions can have the biggest impact. A check-in, a moment of listening, a genuine “Are you okay?” can mean the world to someone who might be struggling in silence.
You never know: a simple conversation could change a life.
