A guide to category 3 supports: consumables

Understanding the different support categories is really important for budgeting your NDIS plan and we here at Just Plan Managers want to make sure you are getting the most out of your plan!

You might remember there are three different types of supports – Core Supports, Capital Supports and Capacity Building Supports. If you need a quick overview of these support types, feel free to check our article on Understanding NDIS Support Categories.

Category 3: Consumables, is under Core Supports. In this article, we will take a closer look at what is considered a consumable, and what the NDIS considers to be “reasonable and necessary” when assessing the purchases made under these funds.

What are NDIS consumables?

NDIS consumables refer to everyday items that participants might need due to their disability support needs. These items aim to enhance independence and encompass a large range of products, from continence products to low-cost assistive technology Typically, these items are accessible from various shops such as chemists, supermarkets and online websites.

Category 3 funding covers the cost of these essential items, ensuring that individuals can manage their personal needs effectively. This type of support funding is also flexible, meaning once an amount has been allocated in your plan, you can decide how you would like to use it within other core supports, as long as it aligns with the goals and outcomes outlined in your NDIS plan.

It is important to note that the NDIS will only fund supports deemed “reasonable and necessary”, and there is a limitation for each item to be valued at less than $1,500. Effectively tracking your expenses in this budget is also very important. This ensures that the allocation of your funds are planned out and optimised in your plan. We can help you do this here at Just Plan Managers!

Examples of what consumables cover

What is considered “reasonable and necessary” for each person can be different, depending on your plan and disability needs. Below are some examples of what you may be able to purchase with your NDIS Consumables budget:

Remember that what you can or cannot purchase will depend on your individual circumstances. We understand this can be confusing sometimes, so please feel free to contact us and we can clarify any questions you have about what is included or not!

It is important to note that Category 3 funding for Consumables will not cover items that are not related to your disability needs. This means general food, grocery items, prescription medications and toiletries that are not needed for your disability will not be covered by this funding.

How Can I Purchase Consumable Products?

Provider Options:

Purchasing Consumables can be through either registered or non registered merchants. Unless you are NDIA-managed, in which case the provider will have to be registered with the NDIS.

Participants who choose plan management or self-management for their NDIS plan can utilise any provider, including local shops or online stores.

Payment Options:

In most cases, participants can directly pay the provider for the consumable items. If the items cost is under $1,500, a formal quote is not required.

Assistive Technology Guidance:

For low-cost and low-risk assistive technology expenses under $1,500, the NDIS recommends seeking advice from an Assistive Technology (AT) advisor. This guidance ensures that participants make informed decisions regarding their AT needs.

In instances where higher-risk assistive technology items are purchased, even if their cost is under $1,500, written advice from an AT advisor is required. This ensures the safety and appropriateness of the AT equipment.

In a nutshell

Category 3 support funding plays a crucial role in providing participants with resources required to manage their personal disability-related needs effectively. By understanding the features and benefits of Consumables funding, participants can make informed decisions and maximise the use of their NDIS plan.
